Weekend Writing Warriors #65!

Hello, my friends! Happy May to you! In honour of a new month, I thought I'd give you something fresh. Crossing the Line will be on the market in July, so rest assured you'll be able to read the rest of the story then. ;) In the meantime, here's a taste of Cheapskates in Love!

Blurby: It’s couples' skating night down at the local rink and Elena Armstrong can’t seem to keep her cocky jock blind date around long enough to knee him in the balls. Sadly, she was too much of a cheapskate to pay for a membership to an online dating site and based everything on Leonard’s personality profile alone. Big mistake.

At the opposite end of the rink, Ben Kessel, another cheapskate on a blind date with Iris, the ice princess, is having a similarly miserable time. Elena, a hater of all things sports-related, inches out into the skating world butt-first and collides with Ben. After sharing their hilarious and horrifying dates-gone-wrong stories, the two disappear and make everything right again on the floor in the players’ dressing room. Almost everything. They forget to exchange numbers. Now these two cheapskates need to make the ultimate sacrifice: pay for a membership to the online dating site so they can track each other down. But is the possibility of love really worth the price of $24.95 per month?

Excerpty:

How long have I been here?
Her toes were numb, her ears were burning, and her jeans were so stiff she could barely move. Wasn’t moving the whole point? Not that there really was a point. All this going ‘round and ‘round in a circle, over and over again, like a goddamned hamster on a wheel. Who was the moron who invented skates, anyway? She had no idea why she agreed to strap the torture devices onto her feet in the first place. She’d rather run down a hill at full speed in eight-inch heels than spend another minute with her toes crammed into these inflexible death traps.

Thanks so much for stopping by and be sure to visit the other Weekend Writing Warriors!

Cheapskates will be featured in an erotic romance boxed set in June with some of my favourite author pals! Stay tuned for deets! :) Shoutout to my daddy whose birthday is today! He's the best dad a girl could ever ask for, and I invite all of you to eat a cupcake in his honour. It's always someone's birthday, so cake is never wrong. Wishing you all a spectacular week!

  1. I've never ice skated, but always thought I might enjoy it. But it doesn't look like your character enjoys it. Vivid description.

    1. Hee! Nope, she's not a fan. I, on the other hand, am a huge fan of ice skating. But it's all about the hot chocolate and warm cinnamon-covered pastries for me. :D Thanks, Cara!

  2. You come up with the most clever places to put your characters. Falling head over heels does happen in skating rinks...but it usually doesn't involve romance : ) This whole eight cracked me up and put a smile on my face!

  6. You do great snark. I totally agree with Elena about skating- what misery! I'd love to see how she deals with online dating, another form of torture.

  9. I've had some dangerous gravity-laden skate experiences, myself. Clearly, they're designed by athletic people to make the rest of us look bad!

  12. Your humor is wonderful, Evelyn! I chuckle every time I read one of your snippets. And the humor extends beyond the snippets. lol. Great description of ice skating. I didn't feel that way as a child, skating, but adulthood did it to me. lol Good 8!
